Unison urges communities to keep trees clear of power lines this summer
With warmer weather already upon us this summer, Unison is urging property owners and communities to take steps to keep trees clear of power lines. Trees near power lines can lead to long-duration power outages, safety issues and in some cases cause fire.
Unison General Manager Network and Operations, Gaganpreet Chadha, emphasised the importance of proactive tree management for community safety and reliable power.
“Vegetation such as trees, hedges, vines and plants near power lines is responsible for around 20% of unplanned power outages.
“They can cause prolonged outages, safety risks, and even fires in dry conditions. By keeping vegetation clear, you’re not just protecting your home but helping ensure the safety and resilience of our electricity network,” Mr Chadha said.
Property owners have a legal obligation to manage trees on their property and prevent them from growing too close to power lines. Recent updates to safety regulations have increased the minimum safe distances between trees and power lines, making it important to assess your property this summer.
How you can help:
- Plant wisely: Avoid planting near power lines if possible. If planting is necessary, choose the right species. Unison provides guidance at www.unison.co.nz/planting-guide.
- Check your property: Regularly look for overgrown vegetation and ensure it is kept at least four metres clear of power lines.
- Call in the experts: If trimming or cutting is needed for your property, contact your local arborist. They’ll liaise with Unison before starting work to ensure it’s done safely.
- Report problem trees: Spot trees or vegetation touching power lines elsewhere? Contact Unison at 0800 2 UNISON (0800 2 86476) or visit www.unison.co.nz/problem-tree to report the issue.
- Know your responsibilities: Property owners must keep trees clear of power lines and underground power cables. Failure to maintain them could result in damage costs or fines. Learn more at www.unison.co.nz/tree-notices.
“We love trees at Unison, but we need your help to manage their growth near power lines. By working together, we can reduce the number of unplanned power outages and safety incidents.
“We wish everyone a safe and happy festive season. Next time you’re outdoors, take a moment to check your property to help keep the power flowing to your home and community,” Mr Chadha said.
