Taupo electricity distributor, Unison Networks is undertaking a project in the central business district that will improve the reliability of electricity for businesses and residents on Redoubt Street and Story Place.
The project involves installing 1.3km of cables from Story Place through Tongariro Street, Tuwharetoa Street and Titiraupenga Street.
Unison Relationship Manager, Danny Gough said the project will take about six weeks to complete, but is necessary to provide customers in Redoubt Street and Story Place with a more reliable electricity supply.
“Currently if there is a fault on the feeder that supplies these customers with electricity, there is no back-up supply. We are therefore creating an alternative route of power supply for these customers, which is a fairly big task,” said Mr Gough.
Unison is limiting disruption to residents and businesses by using directional drilling as much as possible to lay the cable. This means only partial road closures are required.
“The team have already started drilling on Story Place and once this section is complete, we will work through the remaining streets,” said Mr Gough.
Unison is also installing generators during the project to reduce the number of scheduled power outages. Customers that are affected by a planned outage during the project will be notified by their retailers.
“We are very conscious that there are businesses operating in the area, so we plan to restrict any necessary scheduled outages to outside business hours,” said Mr Gough.
