Bright Future Beckons Unison Scholarship Winner
The future is looking bright for Thomas Sturch, recipient of Unison’s Scholarship to study Electrical Engineering.
The Hastings Boys’ High School student ‘blew away’ the Unison selection panel, which included Unison General Manager of Networks & Operations, Jaun Park.
“Thomas was a standout applicant – in addition to his numerous academic and sporting achievements, it was the passion and focus for a career in electrical engineering that he displayed during the interview which made him the clear winner – he really did blow us away.”
And the academic achievements are vast. Nominated as Head Boy in 2013, Thomas finished the year as School Dux, finishing top of his class in Physics, Geography, Art and History. He is also the only student to have achieved all four ‘Honours Blazers’ (Academic, Leadership, Sport and Culture).
His achievements have not been limited to the classroom, with Thomas a member of the 1st XI cricket team, as well as school rugby, football and basketball teams. He’s been the junior and senior Swimming Champion, and achieved Grade 5 Piano with Distinction.
For Thomas, the Unison Scholarship offers financial support and employment security as he embarks on his Bachelor of Engineering at Auckland University.
“The Unison Scholarship is a huge support – in addition to helping cover the costs of my course fees at Auckland University, I know I have summer employment at Unison, and a position as a Graduate Engineer once I finish my study.”
Unison’s Scholarship programme aims to attract and develop the region’s brightest minds, with the Company all too aware New Zealand is facing a shortage of engineers.
“The aim of Unison’s Scholarship programme is to attract and develop the next generation of engineers; using their excellent technical skills and innovative mind-set to continue Unison’s vision of delivering world-class network and energy solutions to its customers.
“Our ability to deliver a sustainable network for generations to come relies on attracting and retaining talented and passionate employees. With applicants of Thomas’s calibre, we’re confident the future of our network is in good hands.”
