Unison Launches Digital Safe Sparks School Competition to Help Keep Tamariki Safe Around Electricity

Schools can go into the draw to win a $500 book or sports gear voucher for their class/school if they complete Digital Safe Sparks before November 30th.

Unison is launching a new competition for primary schools across Hawke’s Bay, Taupō and Rotorua, giving students the opportunity to learn valuable electrical safety skills through the free Digital Safe Sparks programme while going in the draw to win a $500 book voucher or $500 sports gear voucher for their school.

Digital Safe Sparks is Unison’s online electrical safety programme designed to help tamariki learn how to stay safe around electricity at home, at school and out in the community. The programme is free, easy to access and can be completed in a single classroom session.

The competition is part of Unison’s wider commitment to helping tamariki stay safe around electricity. Through initiatives such as Safe Sparks and its long-running Greatest Supporter Programme, Unison works with schools and junior sports clubs across the region to build awareness of electrical safety and support positive outcomes for tamariki, rangatahi and whānau.

Jason Larkin, Group General Manager Customer, Commercial & Regulatory from Unison Networks, says electricity plays an important role in everyday life, and it is important young people understand how to stay safe around electrical equipment and infrastructure.

“Safe Sparks helps tamariki build practical knowledge about electrical safety in a fun and engaging way, covering real-world situations they may encounter at home, near power poles and lines, or while out exploring with friends and whānau.

Originally developed as an in-person classroom programme, Safe Sparks continues to be offered free for schools across Hawke's Bay, Taupō and Rotorua. The addition of Digital Safe Sparks complements these face-to-face sessions, making it easier for more schools to access practical electrical safety education for their students.

The online programme can be completed at any time that suits the classroom, giving teachers a simple, ready-to-use learning activity while ensuring students receive the same important electrical safety messages. It also enables Unison to share these life-saving lessons with more tamariki across its network region, including schools that may not be able to access an in-person session.

To encourage participation, schools that complete the programme and submit an entry form will go into the draw to win either a $500 book voucher for their school library or a $500 sports gear voucher.

Suitable for primary-aged students, the programme covers:

  • Staying safe around power lines and electrical equipment
  • Recognising electrical hazards at home and outdoors
  • Understanding what to do in unsafe situations
  •  Making safe choices around electricity

By partnering with schools, Unison is helping young people develop practical safety skills and habits that could one day prevent serious injury.

Schools can access the free programme and find out more at www.unison.co.nz/safe-sparks. T&C's apply.

Schools wanting an in-person Safe Sparks session can continue to book classroom visits from the Unison team, with Digital Safe Sparks providing an additional option for schools that prefer a flexible online format.

Entries for this competition close on Monday November 30th.
