Working with Permapine to support their electrification journey
2026 | Ongoing
Reporoa-based Permapine is a major timber processor manufacturing poles for domestic and international markets. Like many industrial businesses, Permapine is looking closely at how new technology can help reduce emissions, improve efficiency and support long-term operational resilience.
Permapine has taken a strategic approach to electrification over several years, planning ahead for the changes needed across its site and now beginning to adopt electric technology within its operations.
One example of this long-term electrification strategy is the recent introduction of electric loaders, with Permapine planning to transition a portion of their operational fleet of loaders and excavators to electric over time. While the equipment has some operational differences compared with traditional diesel units, it offers significant efficiency and maintenance benefits that support the business case for change.
Unison has supported Permapine by helping ensure the local network has the capacity needed to meet its operational requirements, including through network upgrades. Unison has also been discussing how Permapine could operate more flexibly where practical, helping move some demand away from peak times on the network.
This work reflects the role electricity networks play in enabling decarbonisation. As more businesses consider electrification, renewable generation, energy storage and flexible demand, network planning and customer partnerships will be increasingly important.
Permapine's journey shows how long-term planning, practical investment and the right network support can help industrial customers transition to a lower-emissions future.
