Keeping your project on track
At Unison, we understand that while our work is crucial to the success of your building or development project, it’s just one piece of the puzzle. To keep your project on track and reduce potential risks, we recommend focusing on these key considerations:
Managing the timing and order of your project is crucial for achieving the desired outcomes. While you can tailor the process to suit your needs, following these key guidelines will ensure your schedule provides the right information:
- Task Breakdown: Identify and group key tasks for all parties involved (e.g., civils teams, utilities, councils, lawyers, builders, consultants).
- Estimate Durations: Determine how long key tasks will take.
- Identify Dependencies: Recognise the links and dependencies between tasks.
- Resource Planning: Account for resources required, as delays in obtaining them may affect your timeline.
- Key Milestones: Set critical milestones and deadlines.
- Critical Path: Identify the key tasks that must be completed in a specific order to avoid project delays.
The critical path is the sequence of tasks that must be completed on time to finish the project as scheduled. Any delays along this path will delay the entire project.
Almost every project comes with risks—potential issues or events that could impact your desired outcomes. To make informed decisions if risks arise, we recommend you:
- Identify potential risks early, including who, what, or how things could go wrong
- Monitor these risks to spot early signs of potential issues
- Continuously review and adjust your approach to managing or mitigating risks, ensuring you don’t wait too long to take action
Actual costs often differ from initial estimates, so it’s recommended to include a contingency in your project budget to account for unforeseen changes. We also suggest tracking cost variances throughout the project to ensure you stay within your budget.
To do this, you can:
- Set up a register or file to track variances between estimated and actual costs
- Record each material variance as it occurs
- Calculate the cumulative sum of the variances
- Assess the net impact on your overall budget (think of it as your margin of error)
