Unison partners with Greening Taupō to power a sustainable future

Unison Networks (Unison) has partnered with Greening Taupō, a community conservation group dedicated to improving the Taupō environment for both people and native wildlife.

Unison is committed to supporting projects that benefit both the environment and the communities it serves. By backing Greening Taupō, Unison is investing in both the natural environment and the long-term wellbeing of the Taupō community.

Unison owns and operates the electricity network supplying power to homes and businesses across Taupō, Rotorua and Hawke’s Bay. Having powered the Taupō region for over 20 years, Unison plays a key role in supporting its communities, not just through delivering safe, reliable and resilient electricity, but also by investing in local partnerships, sustainability initiatives and education programmes.

Unison Group General Manager Customer, Commercial and Regulatory, Jason Larkin says the partnership reflects a shared commitment to building a greener and more sustainable future for Taupō.

“Unison’s vision is to enable our communities’ sustainable energy future and we’re proud to be partnering with Greening Taupō in support of this important mahi to restore and protect our local environment.

“Through our partnership, Unison is backing the three-year restoration of a block of land on Centennial Drive which has been overrun by invasive pest species. Led by Greening Taupō, the site will be transformed into a thriving hub of native biodiversity, creating a vital habitat for native flora and fauna, important corridors for pollinators like native bees, and enhance the natural beauty of the landscape for future generations.

“We’re also looking forward to getting involved with the community planting days, including the Greening Taupō Day this week and the upcoming Power Planting Day in August, held in partnership with Contact Energy at Unison’s Sponsored Site on Centennial Drive,” Mr Larkin said.

Greening Taupō was established to bring together local groups, including iwi, businesses, schools and volunteers, to enhance biodiversity and support sustainable land use in and around Taupō. The group delivers regular planting days, restoration projects and community events, with support from sponsors like Unison.

Greening Taupō Coordinator, Robyn Ellis says Unison’s support will help increase the group’s reach and impact.

“Unison’s sponsorship allows us to do more. More planting, more restoration, and more engagement with the people of Taupō. It’s great to partner with an organisation that understands the value of investing in both people and our community.

“Every planting day brings our community closer together and makes a real difference for local biodiversity. It’s inspiring to see so many people passionate about caring for Taupō’s environment,” Mrs Ellis said.
