A good solar solution should suit your roof, your budget and the way you live. Ask a reputable installer to assess your property and recommend a system based on your actual electricity use. 

The right system is the one that works for your household. 

Your electricity needs may change over time, especially if you add an EV, heat pump, electric hot water, battery or move away from gas. 

Share those plans with your installer now so they can explain what is worth allowing for upfront and what can wait. 

Your retailer may pay you for surplus solar electricity exported to the network, but the buy-back rate is only one part of the plan. 

Compare purchase prices, daily charges, export payments and any time-of-use conditions. A higher buy-back rate does not always mean a lower overall bill. 

Choose the plan that works for all your electricity use, not just what you export. 

Speak with your installer, retailer and Unison before plans are finalised, especially if you are considering export, batteries, fast EV charging or major electrical upgrades. 

Solar panels alone usually will not keep your home powered during an outage. Standard grid-connected systems shut down for safety while crews work on the network. 

If backup power matters to you, ask what the system can supply, how changeover works and whether switchboard work is included. 

Before committing, explore independent advice from EECA and check whether any funding, finance or energy-efficiency programmes apply to your household. 

Insulation, efficient heating or hot-water improvements may also help you get more from your budget. 

While it can be beneficial to do everything at once, you don’t have to, it depends on your needs. Solar might be a first step, with a battery or other upgrades added later.

Get more than one quote and compare the details, including system size, equipment, forecast generation, warranties, installation requirements and ongoing support.
