Taupō East Substation
Powering thriving regions
We’re supporting growth in Taupō with the construction of the new Taupō East Substation. Upon completion this new advanced substation will provide additional capacity to industrial locations in the north and central areas of the region.

Located in the industrial Centennial Drive area of Taupō, this is one of the largest single projects Unison has ever taken on, with the total shared network project budget exceeding $18 million.
Supporting Growth in Taupō.
By working closely with our industrial customers, we’re ensuring the network delivers the capacity and reliability they need to thrive - creating jobs, supporting the economy, and strengthening the Taupō community. This project not only supports business growth but also enhances resilience for all connected customers, ensuring a stable and sustainable energy future.
Environmentally conscious design
Thoughtfully designed to complement the local environment, using eco-friendly materials like cross laminated timber (CLT), the project aims to minimise its carbon footprint as we continue to set a new standard for environmentally friendly substations. Project timeline
Commenced in late mid 2023 the project is divided into three stages. Stage One involves running a 33kV power supply line from the new Tauhara Switching Station to the new Taupō East Zone Substation site. Stages Two and Three include the development the Taupō East Zone Substation (including the new switchroom) nearly doubling the current capacity for local industrial areas.
This project enables growth in the region for years to come while improving reliability.

What is a substation?
Substations, like Taupō East play a crucial role in how Unison supplies electricity to the community. They not only transform voltage from high to low (or the reverse) but also perform other essential functions.
Traditionally, substations have been built without considering their environmental impact. That's why we're taking a proactive approach to ensure our substations are sustainable and environmentally friendly. With 14 substations managed and maintained in Taupō, Unison is committed to powering our community in a way that not only meets energy needs but also protects the environment.
